About the Journal Watch HIV/AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board
Paul E. Sax, MD, Editor-in-Chief
Paul E. Sax, MD, is Clinical Director of the HIV Program and Division of Infectious Diseases at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. He is actively involved in HIV research, clinical practice, and teaching. His research interests include clinical trials of new antiretroviral therapies, the cost-effectiveness of HIV management strategies, and complications of antiretroviral treatment, and the identification, treatment, and outcome of primary HIV infection. Dr. Sax is the Principal Investigator of the Brigham and Women's Hospital AIDS Clinical Trials Unit and is a member of the Cost Effectiveness of Preventing AIDS Complications (CEPAC) Research Group. He has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 1996 and has been Editor-in-Chief since 2003.
Salim S. Abdool Karim, MD, PhD, Associate Editor
Salim S. Abdool Karim, MD, PhD, is Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Professor of Clinical Epidemiology at Columbia University, Adjunct Professor of Medicine at Cornell University, and Director of the Centre for the AIDS Program of Research in South Africa (CAPRISA). He is a clinical infectious diseases epidemiologist with research interests in microbicides and vaccines to prevent HIV infection and in implementing antiretroviral therapy in resource-constrained settings. Dr. Abdool Karim is Chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Group for Reproductive Health at the World Health Organization. He has served on the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 2001.
Helmut Albrecht, MD, Associate Editor
Helmut Albrecht, MD, is the Heyward Gibbes Distinguished Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine. He has served as an investigator of multiple national and international trials, and has published several book chapters and more than 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He is a founding member and former president of KAAD (Klinische Arbeitsgemeinschaft AIDS Deutschland/German AIDS Clinical Trial Group). Dr. Albrecht has served on the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 2004.
Sonia Nagy Chimienti, MD, Associate Editor
Sonia Chimienti, MD, is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of Massachusetts Medical School and Staff Physician in the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at UMass Memorial Medical Center. Although her primary focus is education of medical students and fellows, she is also actively involved in the care of immunocompromised patients, including patients with HIV, recipients of solid and liquid organ transplants, and patients receiving other immunomodulatory therapies. Her current research is focused on quality assurance in transplant recipients and on the provision of HIV post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) to survivors of sexual assault. Dr. Chimienti has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 2005.
Carlos del Rio, MD, Associate Editor
Carlos del Rio, MD, is Hubert Professor and Chair of the Hubert Department of Global Health, Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University, and Co-Director of the Emory Center of AIDS Research. He is also the Program Director and Principal Investigator of the Emory AIDS International Training and Research Program. His research interests include the epidemiology of opportunistic infections in HIV, the epidemiology and transmission dynamics of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases, early diagnosis of HIV, linkage to and retention in HIV care, and prevention of HIV infection. In addition, Dr. del Rio's interests include the optimization of HIV management in resource-constrained countries. He has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 1998.
Keith Henry, MD, Associate Editor
Keith Henry, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine and Director of HIV Clinical Research at Hennepin County Medical Center. He has more than 25 years of experience caring for HIV-infected patients and has spent his entire career at public-hospital and free-clinic sites. In 1987, he pioneered a technique to prevent blindness from CMV retinitis. He has been the coauthor/investigator for several large multicenter studies and remains actively involved in over a dozen research projects in Minnesota. Dr. Henry has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 2004.
Charles B. Hicks, MD, Associate Editor
Charles B. Hicks, MD, is Professor of Medicine at Duke University Medical Center and Director and Principal Investigator of the Duke Interdisciplinary Research Training Program in AIDS. His main interest is clinical management of HIV infection, including primary infection. His research focuses on issues related to antiretroviral treatment, including resistance, both transmitted and acquired. He has also been involved in studying new approaches to improving HIV diagnosis as part of medical care in both acutely and chronically infected persons. Dr. Hicks is involved as well in clinical trials of new antiretroviral agents in all phases of new drug development. He has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 2005.
Abigail Zuger, MD, Associate Editor
Abigail Zuger, MD, is Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and Senior Attending Physician at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center. She is a board-certified internist and infectious disease specialist with particular interest and expertise in HIV infection. Dr. Zuger writes frequently on medical topics for the New York Times and other national publications. Her book, Strong Shadows: Scenes from an Inner City AIDS Clinic, was published in 1995 by WH Freeman, NY. She has been writing for Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care since the publication's launch in 1989 and for Journal Watch General Medicine since 1996.
Judith Currier, MD, MSc, Contributing Editor
Judith Currier, MD, MSc, is Professor of Medicine and Associate Director of the Clinical AIDS Research and Education Center at the UCLA Department of Medicine, where she also serves as Principal Investigator of the UCLA AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. Further, she is Chief of the Division of Infectious Diseases at David Geffen School of Medicine. In addition to maintaining a small HIV primary care practice, Dr. Currier is actively involved in clinical research focused on improving the management of HIV infection in adults. She has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 1991.
Judith Feinberg, MD, Contributing Editor
Judith Feinberg, MD, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Co-Principal Investigator of the University of Cincinnati AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. She has been involved in HIV care and research since the start of the epidemic. Dr. Feinberg was one of the first staff members at the NIH AIDS Program and was involved in the creation and scientific direction of the AIDS Clinical Trials Group. She has served as Chair of the Board of the American Academy of HIV Medicine. She has been a member of the Journal Watch AIDS Clinical Care Editorial Board since 1993.
Rajesh T. Gandhi, MD, Contributing Editor
Rajesh T. Gandhi, MD, is Associate Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Director of HIV Clinical Services and Education at Massachusetts General Hospital. He is the site leader of the Massachusetts General Hospital AIDS Clinical Trials Site in the Harvard/Boston Medical Center/Miriam AIDS Clinical Trials Unit. He is also the Director of the Harvard University Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) Clinical Core. He is the editor of Partners ID Images, an educational infectious diseases website, and organizer of the HIV Online Provider Education (HOPE) program, which is an Internet-based educational conference series for physicians caring for HIV-infected patients in resource-limited settings. His research interests are in clinical trials of immune-based therapies for HIV and in HIV/viral hepatitis coinfection. He has been writing for Journal Watch since 2005.

Gerald H. Friedland, MD, Editor-in-Chief, 1989-1995, Consulting Editor, 1995-2009
Dr. Friedland is Professor of Medicine, Epidemiology and Public Health at the Yale University School of Medicine. His research has focused on the transmission, natural history, and clinical manifestations of HIV infection, particularly in injecting drug users, and on clinical trials of new antiretroviral and opportunistic infection therapies. Dr. Friedland has served as Principal Investigator of the Yale Clinical Trials Unit and ProACT, a regional clinical trials network associated with the CPCRA. He is currently working on transmission of antiretroviral resistance, risk reduction among HIV-seropositive patients, medication adherence, and programs to integrate TB and HIV care in resource-limited settings, with a particular focus on South Africa.
