Tuberculosis and HIV
- February 1, 2002
- Karen A. Wendel, MD, and Timothy R. Sterling, MD
HIV has had a substantial effect on the incidence, clinical manifestations, treatment, and outcome of TB. Globally, HIV and TB are the 2 leading infectious causes of death. Coinfection with these pathogens can be particularly devastating, especially in the developing world, where the burden of disease is high and access to effective therapy is low. This article reviews issues of epidemiology, disease pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment of TB in HIV-infected patients. -
The Evaluation and Management of Dyslipidemia in HIV-Infected Patients
- December 1, 2001
- Carl J. Fichtenbaum, MD
A metabolic syndrome of insulin resistance, obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia is quite common and is a significant risk factor for CHD. HIV-treatment-associated fat-redistribution syndrome with dyslipidemia is similar in appearance to this "metabolic syndrome" observed in non-HIV-infected people. Thus, it is important to review the epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of HIV-treatment-associated dyslipidemia to alert clinicians and patients about this emerging problem. -
Report from the Eighth Retrovirus Conference
- April 1, 2001
The Retrovirus Conference opened and closed dramatically with addresses documenting the catastrophic HIV epidemic in Africa. Between these brackets of international concern, however, the focus was, as usual, the epidemic in the developed world, and, as usual, the experience was not unlike the tactile examination of an elephant: much territory to cover, many fascinating details to explore, but no clear unifying theme. This was not a year for major breakthroughs or paradigm shifts, but rather another milepost at which to absorb a vast array of incremental advances in basic science, epidemiology, and therapeutics. -

- November 30, 2005
