Study Population
  • Pregnant women at 14-34 weeks of gestation with CD4 T lymphocyte count at study entry of 200 or more cells per mm3
Study Regimen
  • During Pregnancy: 100 mg AZT orally 5 times daily
  • During Labor: loading dose of 2 mg/kg AZT, followed by continuous infusion of 1 mg/kg until cord clamped
  • For Newborns: 2 mg/kg AZT oral syrup every 6 hours starting 8 to 12 hours after birth and continuing until the infant is 6 weeks old
Study Results
  • Placebo Group: Estimated transmission rate: 25.5% (confidence interval, 18.4% to 32.5%)
  • AZT-Treated Group: Estimated transmission rate: 8.3% (confidence interval, 3.9% to 12.8%)
  • AZT Side Effects:
    • No significant difference between treated and untreated mothers
    • Mild, transient anemia greater in treated infants
    • No other differences
