Table 4. Anal Pap Smear Technique

  • Moisten a Dacron swab with saline or tap water. An endocervical cytobrush can also be used to obtain cytologic material. Insert swab into the distal rectum, at least 2 cm from the anal verge.
  • Rotate the swab while withdrawing through the anal canal.
  • Smear the swab onto a glass slide and fix with spray fixative or by immersion in alcohol within 10 seconds of withdrawal.
  • Stain fixed smear by routine Pap method for cytological interpretation.
