1. Accurate information is essential, but don't make the patient admit to illegal or socially undesirable acts.
2. Information is a logical starting point for behavior change, but don't stop there.
3. Fear can be motivating, but it can also increase denial.
4. Fear works best if it is moderated and gives the person a way to reduce risk.
5. Motivators are best if individualized; ask the patient what might motivate him or her.
6. Skills building is often necessary; use modeling and role playing.
7. Don't expect behavior change to last; relapse is the norm, not the exception.
