Table 2. Laboratory Testing for Sexually Transmitted Diseases

  • Gonorrhea/chlamydia (cervix or urethra via DNA-based method)
  • Gonorrhea at oropharynx and anus (use culture media since DNA assays are not reliable at these sites)
  • Cervical cytologies for sexually experienced female patients, with colposcopy for follow-up of any abnormalities (the utility of anal cytologies in both men and women is under investigation in REACH)
  • Hepatitis B serologies (use HBcAb for prevaccination and HBsAb for postvaccination one month after completion of series11)
  • Annual syphilis serology (RPR or VDRL)
