Report from the Eighth Retrovirus Conference

The Retrovirus Conference opened and closed dramatically with addresses documenting the catastrophic HIV epidemic in Africa. Between these brackets of international concern, however, the focus was, as usual, the epidemic in the developed world, and, as usual, the experience was not unlike the tactile examination of an elephant: much territory to cover, many fascinating details to explore, but no clear unifying theme. This was not a year for major breakthroughs or paradigm shifts, but rather another milepost at which to absorb a vast array of incremental advances in basic science, epidemiology, and therapeutics.
