HIV-Associated Pulmonary Hypertension

Pulmonary hypertension is a rare condition characterized by an increase in pulmonary vascular resistance that ultimately leads to right ventricular failure. Currently an uncommon complication of HIV infection, pulmonary hypertension may become more prevalent as improved medical management increases the life expectancy of HIV-infected patients. Thus, all individuals caring for HIV-infected patients should be aware of this condition. This review discusses the characteristics of HIV-infected individuals in whom pulmonary hypertension has developed, current theories regarding the role of HIV this process, and treatment options available to these patients.
