Osteopenia in HIV Infection
The association between osteoporosis and HIV infection, identified serendipitously as many patients received body composition scans to assess lipodystrophy, has become the focus of increasing attention. Emerging data suggest that this phenomenon may represent yet another interaction between patient phenotype and antiretroviral therapy, such as occurs in the HIV lipodystrophy syndrome. This article will review the prevalence, possible pathogenesis, and potential management strategies for HIV-related osteopenia.
